Our Story

Ian Sanderson Today

British, creative textiles house, Ian Sanderson is foremost a champion and purveyor of colour and pattern. With a focus on the collection as a captivating design story, designer Helen Sanderson draws inspiration from myriads of cultural and historical references, as well as exploring the nuances and miscellany of classic English design through a contemporary lens. Each collection is thoughtfully curated to bring distinctive character, tone, texture and originality to any interior.

Primarily working with linens and cottons, Ian Sanderson embraces rather than masks the inherent characteristics of natural yarns; slight variations in fibres and weaves create texture and interest that enhance, rather than detract from, the beauty of the design. From its home in West Berkshire, the family-run textiles house, steered by CEO Julian Sanderson, works closely with British print and weave mills and world-leading, international manufacturers, marrying time-honoured production methods with innovative techniques and consideration for style longevity over trend.

History of Ian Sanderson

EST. 1962

Since 1962

Ian Sanderson is a family business supplying fabrics to high end interior designers for over 60 years. The company was founded by Ian Sanderson in 1962; having previously worked at a London wholesaler selling fabrics to designers in London, Ian realised that interior designers needed more choice.  His company originally based in a basement in Charlotte Street in London’s West End, introduced more elaborate designs and colours from Europe and the USA, suited for the 60's lifestyle.
Expansion saw the company move to a warehouse and showroom near the Post Office Tower near Cleveland Street, the district for furnishings in the 70's and 80's, here Ian created his own ranges of fabrics; weaves and prints were produced by UK and European mills, in a studio adjacent to the showroom signature print designs were created.  He stocked popular dupions, chintz fabrics, velvets and other weaves such as classic damasks, textured semi plain weaves and latterly stripe and check designs which he became synonymous for in the 1980 and still today.  Ian had a skill in identifying great fabrics for his clients, which in the early days included new interior designers such as Nina Campbell and Tricia Guild.

We were sad to announce the passing of Ian Bruce Sanderson on 6th December 2014 aged 79. He was the founder of Ian Sanderson Textiles, a leading figure in textiles, an original member of Decorex and one of the true characters in our industry.

Sustainability

Commitment to the environment and sustainable practice.

At Ian Sanderson Textiles, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. We actively recycle all cardboard materials within our warehouse, ensuring they are reused and kept out of landfills.

Our mills contribute to our eco-conscious mission by reusing water during production, significantly reducing water waste. We are proud to work with natural fibres such as cotton and linen, which are valued for their durability, biodegradability, and responsible sourcing. By combining these thoughtful practices, we ensure that our textiles meet the highest standards of quality and align with our commitment to protecting the planet for future generations.

We are continuously assessing our practices and strive to minimise our footprint where possible.
